I want a game discussion for a change.
April 16th 2003, 12:10 CEST by Charles

Let's talk about Deus Ex 2 or something.  Jesus fuck I'm tired of blabhlabhlahblahblahbalhb in everythread.  How about Planetside?  Or this.  Or we can talk about how the PS2's online is suffering due to cheating.  Maybe Microsoft's central servers and subscription service weren't a half bad idea.  We could talk about Soul Calibur 2 now that the import is available.  It's a lot of fun.  It's like Soul Calibur, except there is more!  Or maybe we could talk about how MGS2: Substance for the PC was only shipped on DVD media.  Do you like top down shooters?  Ikaruga is out for the Gamecube.  If you didn't play it for Dreamcast 6 months ago, it's worth checking out now.  Did anyone else finish Xenosaga?  Lots to talk about there.  Hey, we could talk about how Sony is releasing a new PS2 that's supposed to work more often than not.  Star Wars Galaxies has been delayed till June according to EB Games, leaving fanbois foaming at the mouth.  Anyone surprised about that?  Did you know that if your PS2 is having problems reading blue discs you can fix it with tape?  I'm not sure anyone mentioned that Gamecube sales are coming in just under half the expected numbers.  Of course, they've sold more GBAs than expected.  What do you think is going to be shown at E3?  Rumors are flying everywhere about everything, lets hear some of your ideas.  The one I like most is about a PS2 Castlevania.  I'm hoping for more info on Halo 2 as well.

See?  We can still talk about games here.

Budget? Is that a French word or something? Explain this so called "Budget" concept.

Its like FRA-GI-LE ...

I agree with Cheesy.  All games are filler until DX2.  I actually have no idea what the majority of developers are doing at E3 this year.  I was planning on using a topic like this to inform me of all the goodness.

Charles,

Tell us more about ps2 Castlevania.  I don't recall hearing anything about that.

Konami announced they'll be showing a PS2 Castlevania at E3 a couple weeks ago. Hopefully it will be a jazzed up 2D game with lots of 3D graphics and effects ala Contra Shattered Soldier.

Someone here knows, but he hasn't been posting lately.

Lest we forget we need a name for the main character.  Something edgy, like Killden Allded, Maxamillian (Max) Power, or our all time favorite Dick Justice.

What do you think is going to be shown at E3? Rumors are flying everywhere about everything, lets hear some of your ideas.

I'm really hoping Half-Life 2 will be shown, and on the floor. If it's shown and they do it behind closed doors, I don't want to have to try and use connections to get a showing of it, I'm too self-conscious for that stuff. At GDC a couple of years ago I was too shy to ask Cliffy B. if I could see the Unreal 2 showing they were doing in the conference rooms.

I like the fact that it is simple.

Warren, adding the bomb element really improved the sense that you, as a player, really feel like you have control over everything, and it's not just random luck. It's a great laptop game, and Leslie's right, it probably would be a good PocketPC game.

Bleh.

The Scots aren't the only culture where men wear "skirts." Greeks have kilts. Polynesian men also wear the pareo. The Japanese have the hakama.

There are games I'm looking forward to, but discussing them here seems a bit pointless.

What other haunts do some of youse hang out at? I've been reading the Quarter to Three forums lately. They've had a run of trolls recently but there's usually at least a few good gaming discussions going at any given time. That's all I want, really, just a place for some intelligent game discussion. PC used to be pretty much the only stop I had for that and while I acknowledge that some (perhaps most) of the regulars like the freewheeling style of discussion we get here (topics now being derailed in record time), I have to say, for myself, I scroll past more posts than ever before.

I'm not lobbying for PC to change (like it would, anyway), I'm just curious if there are other forums where people talk about games and the signal-to-noise ratio is good.

That was the intention behind the bomb.  It adds a lot more strategy to the game because you aren't totally held to the whims of the random number generator.

As for the PocketPC version, I agree.  I bought a PocketPC yesterday and I'll look into writing a version for it.

What other haunts do some of youse hang out at? I've been reading the Quarter to Three forums lately.

This is pretty much it for me.  PC has had a spate of geopolitical trolls and link whores that seem to derail each thread into something that this one hopes to avoid.  I like how PC is set up with a limited number of threads, as opposed to other forums that have topics with as many user initiated threads as they want.  This feels more like people sitting around having a flowing conversation.  There is also less need to click around which slows the whole experience down, even on broadband.  When I'm feeling like a masochist I'll read (but in no way post) the GameFaq forums.  That'll last about 20 posts before I get sick and leave.  I used to read and post (very infrequently) at ttlg.com.

I don't really look forward to any games anymore.  That way leads disappointment and sadness.  Instead, I wait to hear what games are actually good and buy them.  Tropico 2 sounds like it might be fun for a week or so, and GalCiv is on my shopping list.  Some people are predicting that MOO3 will be a good game with another year of patches, but I will wait and see.

Carmack did indeed say that Doom 3 wouldn't be showing at multiple E3s but I've since been informed that a private backroom showing doesn't count.  So we've got one big public Doom 3 extravaganza to go.

I agree with Cheesy. If I want to talk about games, I feel free enough to bring them up. If I want job advice, I feel free enough to bring it up here as well. I think that's cool. I've learned to be jaded enough here, but also to not take it so seriously, and I've rather enjoyed it here for the past few months.

Things I would bring up to talk about:

#1. The games I am looking forward to are all sequals.

#2. Should leave my public school teaching job to become an assistant principal at a charter school?

#3. What's next for the US, as far as international policy goes?

#4. Nicole Kidman: Hot or Not?

#5. Jafd: Fucker or sucker?

See. The variety is the appeal of PC.

Half Life 2 would be interesting, though I really hope they have Doom 3 level tech.  If not, I dunno.  Half Life was all about ambience the first time through, and Doom 3 / Deus Ex 2 / etc are upping the ante.  Regarding Doom 3's release date, Carmack said it would be possible to finish before E3.  A little different than declaring a ship date.

There were also rumors a while back of MGS3, or whichever the Gamecube title will be.  I'm hoping to see that.

If I were to hope for a suprise showing or announcement of a game, it'd be System Shock 3.  You just know it's in the pipe somewhere, what with Deus Ex 2 and Theif 3 using tech that would be so suited for it.  Or hell, even as a Doom 3 engine game.  I'm interested in seeing any doom 3 based game when it comes down to it.

Of course, this is only a minor technicality, as even when "properly elected" into office, a politician has as much chance of not having gotten there via corrupt means as Dubya has of spelling racecar backwards.  --UncleJeet
